Students at our school face extremely high chronic truancy rates (65%) and mobility (33%), and they live in close proximity to frequent community violence. Achievement and graduation rates are much lower than state averages, and school leadership consistently faces challenges with regard to student discipline and attendance.
The body of research into full service schools has indicated a great need for after school programs in historically underserved communities.
The percentage of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch programs is listed at 86% of the total enrollment of 840 students during the 2017-2018 school year. Further demographic data indicates a gender distribution of approximately 50% for each gender and an ethnicity break-down of 68% Black, 17% Hispanic, 10% White, and 5% Two or More Races.
These materials will help bring our school chess club resources up to par with other schools. We recently received donated boards and pieces from a local adult chess league, but we do not have chess clocks or carrying cases that we can bring for tournament play. This purchase will complete the items we need for our club.
Drawing from research conducted by the Boston Public Schools in 2012, high-quality out-of-school time has been shown to improve grades, test scores, attendance, graduation rates, behavior, self-esteem, and relationships with peers and adults, while at the same time, it has been shown to prevent drug and alcohol use, violence, and truancy.
