Chess Time! My kids come from all walks of life. Our chess club is open to any student who would like to play chess - no appointment required! My chess club meets in the morning and bus students walk right by my room. Many come right off the bus and into my room to play chess. I also have 5-10 kids that get to school early and are waiting at my door for the club to start.
My kids need more quality chess sets and chess timers.
Last year I wrote a grant to get 5 new, high quality chess sets. Thanks to Donors Choose, those chess sets were delivered and they are getting LOTS of use. However, our little project has grown into a chess club at the school. I'm now getting 25 to 30 kids each Thursday morning to play chess. Unfortunately, some kids are walking in the room, seeing that there is a line to play, and walking out. I also have some students who are becoming advanced in their skills. It is time to move to timed chess games with a competition like atmosphere.
My Project
A small group of my students playing chess after their math work was complete has turned into a full fledged, school-wide chess club. Many students have advanced to a level of chess where they need to start practicing with a timer. The 5 timers that I have requested will be invaluable to these students. Although they have plenty of time to play, having a timer brings chess to a whole new level. They need these timers so they can practicing slowing down and thinking despite the fact that the clock is ticking.
The additional boards will bring both quality and quantity to the group of chess sets that the chess club can use.
The two wooden chess sets are of tremendous quality. Hesitant students don't like playing with cheap sets - they love the look and feel of hand-carved wooden pieces. In addition to these high quality sets, I need more high quality practice sets that have easy storage. The 4 additional plastic sets accomplish this. The pieces are larger, they are weighted to give them a quality feel, and they store very conveniently.
These timers and new chess sets will significantly upgrade the chess club experience and allow many more students to take part with the chess club.
