My students need full chess sets including roll-up mats and pieces.

The students in my school are special because they are full of love, life and energy. Each day they come into the building with vibrant smiles and a passion for learning. While they all share a common investment in their education, they don't have the best available resources while attending our school. In addition, their background experiences, in many ways, are generally limited to the scope of our community in South Dallas. They desire something more, and with the right resources, they can experience a wonderful activity they might not have otherwise.
Last year, as a fourth grade writing teacher, I incorporated chess as often as possible throughout the school year. Chess has been shown to challenge students in thought processes that general academic activities cannot, including forethought, critical thinking, reflection, and strategy. Now I am serving my school as an assistant principal and would like to see everyone k-6 learn to play chess. In order to achieve that goal, I am trying to gather the materials necessary for starting a school-wide chess club. In order to serve 20 students, I need 10 mats with both white and black pieces included. My plan is to have try-outs for grade levels 1-6, recruiting 4 or 5 students from each grade. Chess Club will meet one day per week after school from 4-5pm. Our campus participates in several competitions throughout the year, including UIL. I would like for those individuals to compete and do well! When chess club is not in session on a daily basis, the materials will be used during the community circle time.
