This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I poll my students at the beginning of the year, a vast majority of them comment that they are really excited about doing chemistry labs. While we do as many labs as possible with common household chemicals, it is impossible to demonstrate all the different types of chemical reactions.

My students are respectful, curious, courageous and always doing their best.

At DSST we hold our students to high expectations while supporting them in every way we can to be successful. DSST College View are mostly English language learners and our school is over 80% Latino and the school is 90% FRL program. My students make great leaps and bounds everyday. They have built a great level of responsibility and integrity and thrive with hands-on learning and cooperative learning challenges.

My Project

Students will use the chemical sets to learn about the different types of chemical reactions by observing how an unknown chemical reacts with 5 different known chemicals. Not only does this project allow them to work safely with different types chemical reactions, but engages their deductive thinking by asking them to identify the unknown.

I believe that my students, as English language learners deserve to have daily hands-on experiences in science class.

Help me make this happen! These materials will provide my students with a critical opportunity to work hands-on with the common metal halides, acids, and bases. This will have a big impact because it is fun and academically rigorous.
