My goal is that by the end of the school year my students are ready to ask novel scientific questions and as a group design a way to test those questions and be determined to find possible solutions to problems in questions. In order to achieve this I have to scaffold inquiry for them along the way.
My students come from the neighborhood surrounding school.
The school is located on the northwest side of the city of Chicago, and just as the city itself students in my school come from a very diverse background. They are amazing young people and I am excited to take them on huge science journey this year!
My Project
The materials that I have requested are chemistry class support kits. These kits consist of materials and directions to complete labs related to specific concept, such as acid base chemistry. Each kit corresponds to concepts covered in a unit that I will be teaching this year. That way during each unit students will be able to compete an experiment that corresponds to the lessons we are covering. They will perform lab experiments to further their knowledge, as well as develop laboratory and inquiry skills.
In the beginning students will get detailed directions on how to complete these experiments, but as year progresses they will have to complete experiments based on previous knowledge and experience, and eventually design experiments on their own using a list of materials. I want to deepen my students' curiosity for science and push them to further discover scientific knowledge through group work on experiments that are within these chemistry kits.
I really want to create a classroom where students are exposed to current science and have a clear idea what it means to be a scientifically literate person.
These kits would be a very helpful in reaching that goal. Schools in inner cities do not have a lot of resources and that limits students exposure to scientific experiments. I do not want my students to lack this experience, so I am really grateful for any help I can get to reach this essential dream!
