Can you imagine a doctor's office without digital thermometers? A check out line with out a computerized register? Math class without a calculator? My chemistry students need equipment that prepares them for the future while doing lab activities in our class.
In our 1000+ student high school in the Gold Country of northern California, students have access to beautiful rural environments but not high tech living.
Many of our students' parents and grandparents attended our school and there is tremendous school pride and spirit--just not a lot of high tech opportunities or money! Most internet is still dial-up in our area, though some do have satellite. Approximately 1/3 of our population is on free and reduced lunches and our area has been hard hit by the closure of the local saw mill and the general economic decline with 13% unemployment in the county.
My Project
We currently have 6 graphing calculators with the electronic probes and base unit. This requires groups of 5-6 students per set-up. Additional equipment will allow smaller groups so the students will a gain better understanding of the topics we are studying.
Students will be required to use more technology in their future.
The more familiar they become with electronic lab equipment the better they will fare in college and their future careers in applied sciences or health occupations.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
