My Students
I teach at a Title I high school. A great deal of my students are English Language Learners. Because of this, many of them lack the confidence it takes to learn math and science. Because of this, I attended to a two-week training this past summer on the modeling method of teaching. As a result, I have totally revamped my Chemistry curriculum this year. A large part of this teaching style is the students working in groups and coming up with answers on dry-erase boards to share their work. My students have taken to this very well.
With the freedom of creating content on the dry-erase boards, students are less fearful of making mistakes and more willing to try out new ideas and concepts.
A large part of the curriculum is the particle model of matter and how it continues to evolve as we progress through our class. With this new curriculum, quite of few of students are grasping concepts that eluded many in years past.
My Project
A major part of my Chemistry class is students modeling what they observed and learned on large dry-erase boards. This is the first time I’ve taught Chemistry this way, so I purchased some shower board and cut it up to make cheap dry-erase boards for my students. After one semester of use, these impromptu boards have become increasingly difficult to erase. If a student wants to change something they just wrote on their board, it is almost impossible to wipe it clean with just a towel. Many of my students are very frustrated by this.
A new set of real dry-erase boards would reignite students’ enthusiasm for presenting their ideas in class.
Many of my students get frustrated easily and don’t need much of reason to stop trying. As we forge through the more difficult concepts in the spring, I want them to keep their spirits up. I’m also hoping the purchase of cleaner designed specifically for dry-erase boards will help preserve them so they can last for several years.
