Help me give my students rulers, plastic supply trays and plastic instruction holders so they can explore multiple topics through rotating lab station activities.
At my school, chemistry is an elective science. My students are honors and AP level students, sophomores, juniors and seniors who have chosen to challenge themselves and expand their scientific knowledge. They will constantly ask when we are going to do another lab or if there is a lab that goes with a specific topic. My AP students in particular are very vocal about how much they enjoy the lab component of the course because it helps them really grasp the central concepts.
Last week, in honors chemistry lab, a student asked his lab partner a question and the lab partner responded "Oh, I remember this from class!" as she quickly pulled out her notes and proceeded to answer the question.
A common practice in my classroom is that students will shout "lightbulb!" to alert me that they finally understand a concept they've been struggling with.
Last year, 13 of 127 students were AP level. This year, 20 of my former honors students have signed up for AP Chemistry and 11 more have listed it as their alternate choice. They are eager for this new challenge and we are slowly growing AP Chem at our school.
My Project
In chemistry, having a laboratory component to your lessons is essential to help students understand and apply what is learned in class. Often, a single lab experiment can take many hours to complete, unfortunately, we only have 49 minutes to set up, experiment, and clean up. To increase the amount of hands on experiences each student has, I use lab stations, where the materials and instructions are placed at each lab bench for easy set up and clean up. Students have everything they need and can start experimenting immediately.
The plastic supply trays will be used to keep the materials at each station organized, the bins are multicolored so that each station can be color coded for easy clean up.
The plastic picture stands will be used to hold the objective and instructions for each lab station so that students have a quick reference of what they will accomplish with each experiment. and finally the rulers are so that students can draw their data tables and graph the results of their experiments. Requiring the students to use rulers enforces the importance of neatness in science data collection and analysis.
