This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Chemistry can be a difficult class for many teens. I teach my class with the goals of having students think about how chemistry presents itself in the world around them. So they are always thinking and engaging in hands on activities.
I have my students perform many labs in class, which can sometimes be stressful for teens.
So I aim to use half of these materials to continue having them engage in the hands-on activities (because science can be kind of expensive) while using the other half to help them disengage from the rigors of chemistry. I can help them decompress through art projects (that I will relate to their learning of course) like the making of slime (polymer chemistry) and making chromatography butterflies (using the markers). We also play review games where I utilize the stickers as prizes during class and during our school's annual STEM Family Night.
These materials will hopefully help me answer my students' question "How does chemistry relate to me?" in a more meaningful way. I aim to be able to connect chemistry (and science in general) in such a way that my students will see how chemistry (and science in general) affects their lives now and continue to see the connection long after they finish my class.
