Chemistry and You!

My students need to be able to see chemistry. The models will help them visualize this while the demo kits (along with labs in the class) will allow them to see it.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The biggest challenge to teaching chemistry is answering the question "how does this apply to me?" I really can't answer this meaningfully within the first month. But by the end of the course, students make these connections with their lives. These supplies will help me reinforce these connections.

I teach at an inner-city math, science & technology magnet.

The impression I get when I tell people this is "You must have some good kids." This is not always the case. My students are well behaved and respectful and I am truly grateful for this. However many times they come to me with little background knowledge and experience when it relates to science. They have been drilled with language arts and math from when they were young while science sits on the back burner. Some have even lost their innate curiosity of "how the world works?". Everyday, I aim to bring back that curiosity in my classroom.

My Project

I aim to use these materials to bring back the innate curiosity and relate chemistry to their everyday lives. The models will help them to visualize the micro scale of chemistry in a macro way. The demonstration kits and chemicals will be used to show the students chemistry as it happens. I have the students perform many labs in my class. These demos will help supplement these labs and the students knowledge base overall. The books will help my students relate chemistry to the real world. They will be able to read how chemistry has shaped history. They will read about how chemistry is present and affect their lives to this day (as it pertains to what they eat, buy, and use). They will also be able to use these books as primary sources for research projects I have them complete throughout the year. I also have many puzzles (brainteasers) on my desk. Students will pick them up randomly and try to solve them. I use these to get students to think and problem solve.

These materials will hopefully help me answer my students question "how does this affect me?" in a more meaningful way.

I aim to be able to connect chemistry (and science in general) in such a way that my students will see how chemistry (and science in general) affects their lives now and continue to see the connection long after they finish my class.
