Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a large school with a very high immigrant population on the Chicago south side, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced-price lunch. We have a great science curriculum but are lacking supplies to do hands-on chemistry projects.

My students really get into doing science and want to try different things I talk about.

When they get to "do science", I see the light bulbs light up. They are always excited to come into my class.

My Project

These materials will make my students knowledgeable about how chemicals react with each other not just in a book or on paper but in real life. They will be able to see what happens when they try the experiments and learn safety precautions at the same time.

First-hand experience with chemical reactions will provide a wealth of information that the students will take with them for the rest of their schooling.

This is something that they normally do not have the opportunity to do. With the focus on STEM in the science classroom, this will help them get there.
