Mrs. I. from SC is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
See what Mrs. I. is requestingMy students need Pacon Poster Boards, Mega Pencil Assortment and Colored Pencils to study chemical compounds everywhere outside of the classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are mostly minority students with high poverty backgrounds. They are interested in coming to school and learning science. They enjoy learning chemistry concepts by programming results from experiments and incorporating them into their learning process. They also enjoy drawing pictures to interpret their understanding of the chemistry concept.
A high percentage of my students live in poor neighborhoods where they are exposed to activities that can lead them into making poor decisions.
Therefore, I need help in keeping them focused, energized and ready to learn.
This project requires that students take a poster board and some markers home to research chemical compounds found at home in food and household items. They will need about 20 different labels from items like snacks, soap, shampoo and cosmetic products. They are to cut out the labels from those items and place them on a poster board in numeric order. Then they will create a data table where they will write down the names of the items/ products and the chemical compounds that the items contain. They will research the chemical formula for the chemical compounds and complete their data table with the information about each item/ product.
The students will decorate poster boards using colored pencils and markers, then they will place the labels and data table on the poster board using glue sticks.
This project is sure going to expose my students to STEM and ARTS!
Lastly, they will create a booklet with information about their findings from the project. The booklet will be in a newspaper format and it will contain the breakdown of the different chemicals found in the food or household items, the usefulness and dangers of those chemicals to our bodies.
This project will help my students learn the different types of chemical compounds present in their food and household products by their chemical names and chemical formulas. They will also learn the usefulness and dangers of excessive use of some household items due to the chemicals present in the ingredients.
