Chemical Artistry

My students need 120 art canvases and paint to create a wall sized periodic table for our school.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Teller's classroom raised $613

This project is fully funded

What's the atomic number of Oxygen? I am an 11th grade chemistry teacher at a fairly new start up school (4 years old). Our school serves a wide range of students from varying backgrounds. We are in a high-need community. The focus of our school is expeditionary learning.

As a small start up school, most of our funds are diverted to our immediate needs. The shower curtain periodic table I purchased for the classroom has served us well, but it is time for an upgrade. Students need to have a large periodic table from which they can utilize information such as, the atomic number and mass of an element.

This project will have students focus on a particular element. They will research their element and develop a piece of art that will display the elements symbol, name, atomic number and mass. This piece of art will become part of a wall sized periodic table for our classroom. In the past (at my former school), I have done this with quilt squares, creating a periodic table quilt. The project is engaging, the students learn about the elements, and get to create their own art piece. The canvases and paint that I've requested will allow us to accomplish this goal.

Your assistance in making this project a reality will help students to learn about elements in not just an academic manner but an artistic one as well. We all recognize the chemistry is not always a favorite subject, but injecting the course with creativity and connections to our world can make it engaging. It is a powerful feeling for a student to be able to look up at the wall in the classroom and see art that they have help to create, art that will be displayed for years to come.
