My Students
Let us not help build the School to Prison Pipeline but let us be groundbreaking in building the Chem to College pipeline!
My students are mainly juniors and seniors.
Most of them will just be starting to prepare for college. My school is categorized as the lower performing schools in the county and in need of extra support and assistance for our students, who all experience high levels of poverty and educational inequity. The majority of my students will either be the first or in the first generation of their families to attend college. Statistically, only 27% of them will graduate college within four years (compared to 42% of students whose parents graduated from college).
My Project
My students will become better class participants using hand held whiteboards to share their answers. Teaching in the inner city causes classrooms to often become very transient environments. With the use of the handheld whiteboards my students will be able to become active participants in the classroom making it a more favorable experience while they are there. Also with the placement of a printer in my classroom I will be able to provide all of my students with ample independent worksheets to hone their skills and give my students a resource to print out their work since a large percentage do not have computers in their homes.
To reverse the widespread idea of the "School to Prison Pipeline" which is the idea that public schools push students, especially those who are already at a disadvantage, out of schools and into America's prisons I have constructed my very own "Chem to College Pipeline" which will provide them with college preparation curriculum.
My goal is to create not only young chemistry masters, but conscious citizens who will use scientific inquiry, as used in Chemistry, to inquire on the world around them.
