Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Due to the rapid spread of COVID-19, schools are no longer in session and the transition to online learning has been a tedious process, especially for students with special needs. I teach social skills to eight classes in a 6:1:1/8:1:1 autism setting for over 50 wonderful students who have delays in their social, cognitive, and language development. Most of my students are visual and tactile learners who benefit from consistency. While some students are able to focus and complete work on a computer, others require concrete materials to assist with their learning, especially their social skills.
Many of my students come from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds and lack the resources at home to enhance their learning.
Teaching over technology is already difficult for many of my students but trying to teach self-awareness, conversations, social/play skills, perspective taking and friendship without my students having access to concrete materials makes it more challenging.
My Project
Teaching socials skills remotely to students with autism has been a real challenge, especially for the many who rely on concrete materials and repetition as a critical learning piece in their education. We will be focusing on chefs and bakers as part of a Community Helpers Unit and having pretend play food that can be used for video modeling during remote learning will help them to better visualize how to construct various sandwiches.
Sandwiches are a preferred food item for my students and being able to provide my students with sandwich making demonstrations will make learning about life skills a more motivating and meaningful experience.
The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will allow my students access to printable/online foods, activities, recipes, and direction cards so they can begin learning how to create sandwiches. Some students may even be able to create their own recipes and complete a food review. Having a diverse variety of sets will also allow my students to generalize their sandwich-making skills. Ultimately, it would be amazing if my students could have a virtual lunch party and highlight their sandwich-making skills and mealtime manners.
Please help my students get the resources they need to become little sandwich makers.
