Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a teacher in a PreK-5 elementary school in the South Bronx. We are a Title 1 school and over 90% of the student receive free school lunch. For several years, discipline has been an issue in our school. Last year, our school implemented a positive behavior reinforcement program. Students earn tickets from any staff member in the school when observed following school rules. Students receive tickets for walking in the hallway quietly, appropriate behaviors in the lunchroom, and keeping on task in the classrooms. Security guards, custodians, office staff, lunchroom staff, PTA are all part of this initiative. In return, the students redeem the tickets for cheetah bucks which they can use in the school store. The store has arts and crafts supplies such as crayons, markers, and glitter. The store has an array of games, books and other incentives that are donated from teachers and the community. They can also earn lunch with the principal, a pizza party, an ice-cream party, an extra gym period, or a movie period. This year, I have notice a drastic change in the tone of the building. Student discipline is improving. The hallways are quiet and calm. There is less ruckus and fighting. However, the school store supply is running low. I would like to continue to support the school and the students with this initiative. We need to replenish our rewards/prizes.
