My students need 7 chess sets and a timer so that they can prepare for chess tournaments. With 7 sets our students will have more opportunities to play.
Imagine chess sets throughout the classroom. Enthusiastic fifth graders are fully engaged in a chess tournament with enough chess sets for everyone to play. Let the games begin. In this scenario there are enough sets for students to play more often and hone their chess skills.
My fifth grade students attend a New York City public school in the borough of Queens.
We are an international community speaking many languages with a diversity representative of our great city. Our students and their families see education as the vehicle to upward mobility and our school is a center to help realize those goals. Preparing our students to pursue academic success includes a global perspective that our cultural diversity supports. As a public school we are proud of our highly motivated students and the quality of education we provide, but we know we need the best resources to do so. We also want to bring innovative exciting activities to the students and who will bring home what they learn to their families.
My Project
We are requesting 7 chess sets in cases that allow the students to take the sets with them to recess or to another part of the room without fear of losing game pieces. It is common for students to lose pieces of any game in transport but these cases hold the board and the pieces securely if the game has to be moved to another location. The timer will help students learn the game following the rules involving the limited time periods for making chess moves. Chess has become very popular which means students in a typically large New York City class may have long wait times before everyone gets to play. 7 chess sets would alleviate that problem and allow the students to enjoy tournaments more often. What a pleasure it would be to eliminate the "wait" frustration.
Chess is a wonderful game that encourages strategic thinking.
It will afford students an engaging productive activity, especially during inclement weather, now that winter is approaching. The students have been asking for chess sets and I am so pleased that they have made such a positive request. I only hope we can obtain these sets for them to enjoy so they can participate in chess tournaments.
