This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I lead a vibrant chess club of 25 students at a Title I school with a high population of English language learners and students from diverse cultural backgrounds. These young scholars are curious, strategic, and eager to challenge themselves through the game of chess. For many, this club is their first introduction to the game and it’s quickly become a space where they build confidence, community, social emotional skills and critical thinking skills.

This project will provide our chess club with the materials we need to grow and thrive.

We’re requesting Tactical Smart Chess boards for practicing

Tournament-style chess sets and boards

Instructional books and visual guides

Incentives like medals, certificates, or trophies for tournaments

These resources will help us run engaging practices, host friendly competitions, and support students at all skill levels, from beginners to budding grandmasters.

Chess teaches patience, focus, and problem-solving skills that benefit students far beyond the board. For our multilingual learners, it’s also a powerful way to connect across language barriers through shared strategy and play.
