This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 5th grade in a Spanish and English Dual Immersion school. This means that instruction is taught in English and Spanish. Our students are mostly from immigrant families. Most of our students are English language learners, and 95% of them receive free lunch. Our school is located in a neighborhood struggling with drug and gang violence.
My students are rambunctious and sometimes unruly, but they are also resilient, wonderful, and hopeful.
They are dedicated to their families and loyal to their friends. They help out at home with younger siblings. Some of them are already responsible for the care of a younger brother or sister. They love all the things that any 10 year old loves... recess, friends, games, and field trips. They dream and hope for a better future.
My Project
My students want to learn how to play checkers! Playing checkers will help build problem solving skills, strategic thinking skills and important social and emotional skills.
Friday will be checkers day!
After our work is done, the students will end their day with a challenging and fun game of checkers. Who knows? We might even have a checkers championship! How wonderful would that be!
My students have spent a whole year online without contact with their friends. Playing checkers will be a way to make up for that lost time.
