Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been teaching for over a decade and am so glad to be with my group of students this year. They are bright, focused, and excited about learning. At our campus, we are committed to serving both English and Spanish speakers. If a student is a Spanish speaking student, we support them in their home language until 3rd grade. After that, we try to help them successfully transition into speaking both English and Spanish.
Our campus is committed to growing students in Science and Writing so that we are preparing them for bright futures.
Our campus is in a low income neighborhood that serves students from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
My Project
Remember the joy of walking into a book fair? Or the first time you got your library card? Help my students keep this joy going by giving us the resources we need to take care of books. Last year our school was closed for 2 weeks because of Hurricane Harvey. This year we started off with positive energy, that I know will continue throughout the year.
Each year my 1st grade students are excited to get books from our classroom library, and our school library.
Because they are excited to check books out, they often take them everywhere with them. This causes lots of wear and tear, and sometimes the books even get misplaced. It can be very discouraging for students to go to the library and not be able to check out books because you have lost or damaged a book. I would love to give them the skills they need to take care of books, so that it can transfer into other areas of their life-- like taking care of their homework, school supplies and even personal items that they have at home. I believe I can do this by providing them with large plastic pouches for them to carry their books in. It is almost impossible for our little learners to lose these large pouches. Won't you help us teach our kids how to love, learn and take care of books?
