Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are a diverse group of motivated, hard-working and passionate learners. Living in an urban neighborhood in Northwest Washington, DC, some of our students find themselves below grade level or struggling to learn English. However, we provide all the resources and support to help these students reach grade level expectations by the end of each school year, by teaching them to work through the curriculum at their own pace. At our school, we emphasize that education is journey and not a competition. Through personal devices for all students grades 3-8; free breakfast, lunch and snack every day; and an extended school day so there is time for mentorship and intervention, our students are equipped with the power to overcome any challenges and reach any and all of their personal goals.
My Project
Many of my students are high level readers with high interests in new books. In addition, I have many students that are new to the country and have minimal resources at home. In order to feed their curious minds and their home libraries, I need books and magazines for all students.
My students need books to check out from our classroom to read at home, with no obligations for returning them.
When my students find a new book or magazine to read in my room, they typically don't want to put it down. This set of books and magazines will allow students to borrow and/or keep books.
This also ensures that our newcomers to the country have reading material that they can practice reading at home.
