Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Have you ever checked a book out of from the library? I am a third grade teacher in a urban setting were some children have not. The poverty level is low in the neighborhood where I teach and a large percentage of the children qualify for free and reduce lunch. The children at my school have huge hearts and the desire to learn to read. Now all they need is a chance!

The library at my school has books, but we have no librarian so the children do not have an opportunity to check books out to read at home. I have spent the past few years trying to build up my classroom library. I have spend a lot of money to ensure the children have books to borrow. Every year, the number of books I have declines because the children do not return them. I want the children to become responsible for check the books out and returning them.

What I am looking for is organization for my slow building library. I am asking for library pockets and cards that I can put then in all of the books. This way, the children can check a book out and then become responsible for that book until it is returned to the class library. I am hoping with this system in place, not only will I be teaching responsibility, but I will also maintain the books in my library.
