As a Reading Intervention teacher, I serve students who are currently not reading and writing at grade level. While many children just need a bit of extra explicit instruction, there are also children who are struggling due to learning differences. For others, it's due to social-emotional issues happening within and outside of school. No matter what the cause, struggling with reading and writing can really affect a child's confidence and love of learning.
I plan to use the Teachers Pay Teachers credits to download and print individual books for students to practice specific phonics skills that we're working on.
Finding these books is surprisingly difficult, especially for higher-level phonics skills that my older students need to work on.
By providing students access to these "decodable" readers, they can use spelling and sound patterns that they've just learned in order to "decode" or "sound out" most words in the book. Being able to have control over decoding words in a book gives struggling readers much-needed practice and also helps them to feel confident and successful.
