My Project

My fourth-grade students, led by a couple of children who already loved chess, have become fans of chess and beg to have time to play with a partner.

Many of them are English as a Second Language students, and they are thrilled and proud to show off their smarts by playing this international game of strategy and skill!

So much of their math curriculum is solving multi-step word problems and the students disengage before they even get to the calculations! Chess keeps them engaged in a friendly, competitive way and is equitable for children of all abilities and languages.
