This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am thrilled to be teaching math and science to my incredible sixth graders this year! These are my favorite subjects, and I just love this age group. My students are enthusiastic about learning new things and are full of energy!
Our school has a spectacular staff and incredible community support.
Even though we are located in a low socioeconomic area, it is clear that parents want the best for their children, this is evident by their active involvement.
My students face many daily challenges, as many come from foster homes or might be experiencing homelessness; however, they always come to school with dazzling smiles, ready to have fun learning.
This is going to be an amazing school year because so much has changed. It was difficult to transition to distance learning as neither staff nor families were prepared. Now, we are ready and our students are eager to start learning online. It will look so much different, but I am confident that we will all do our very best.
My Project
I have implemented a fun economy system in my classroom. My students earn class cash for various jobs. They also earn bonuses for excellent behavior, consistent homework, and class participation. I pay my students every other week and they use their money to purchase items from Purcell's Pricey Palace, our class store. However, they must be responsible and save money for fines. My students pay posted amounts for having trash under their desk, unscheduled pencil sharpener visits, and drinks/bathroom trips during instructional time.
With the upper grades, I like incorporating a checkbook into this economy.
I feel it is an important skill to learn at a young age. When I found this classroom set of checkbooks, I knew it was meant to be! My students will learn how to deposit their class cash into their checking accounts. Purcell's Pricey Palace will no longer accept cash, so store purchases will be checks only. They will learn how to properly write checks and update their register.
With your help, my students will learn a very important life skill. They will become financially aware and responsible, having to manage a checkbook on a weekly basis. They may choose to pay the $20 fine for a drink after lunch, or maybe they will save it and buy a brand new mechanical pencil instead. Either way, it means keeping track of their finances and becoming financially literate.
