Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My older students have the opportunity to join our school choir or our school Orffestra, a new instrumental ensemble that, like the choir, meets once a week after school. While choir is for kids who love to sing, Orffestra is for kids who love to play ukuleles and xylophones (also known as Orff instruments, named after the late composer/educator Carl Orff who developed them).
While choir kids can practice their music at home by just singing, Orffestra kids must either remember what they practiced or buy an instrument they probably can't afford (and only need temporarily) - unless the school can lend them one for at-home practice.
Like my choir kids, my Orffestra kids rehearse with me once a week for 1 hour. They have a total of 10 rehearsals before a performance showcasing their hard work.
My kids work hard and want to be challenged. They love improving and growing. They want to experience being in an instrumental ensemble. Once in middle school, my 5th graders will join band, choir, or orchestra and will have had the experience - with the help of the instrument lending program - of having had an instrument to borrow for practice. They'll be prepared to work independently so they can collaborate in a group, knowing they're responsible for their own contribution to the whole. This instrument lending program will allow all my kids to excel, especially those from low-income households who are determined to take advantage of growth opportunities that will help them reach their potential, that they can do anything as long as they have the resources.
More than half of students from low‑income households
