Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is home to 430 children in an urban community, from New Jersey. All of our students qualify and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most of the students at our school are children from hardworking immigrant families who have stories of struggle and resilience.

Many of the children have difficulty with reading, and some have a history of traumatic events which has made learning a challenge.

I continually try to be a leader for my school community by creating opportunities for the children to grow and be their social-emotional best.

As the school nurse, I give a lot of hugs and create a safe place for the children to connect and feel loved while also treating their illnesses.

The Covid-19 pandemic has added an ACEs score to each child during distance learning. It is considered to be one that will leave children behind academically, socially, and emotionally. Helping children self-regulate and deal with their feelings and perceived stress is going to be a priority.

My Project

Amid the rising cases of coronavirus in the country, we all are implementing various measures to keep ourselves, our families, and our students safe. In order to ensure this, there are various essential products and equipment required to protect ourselves from the virus. These may include masks, sanitizers, PPE kits, and more. However, one essential piece of medical equipment helping us battle this pandemic is a working thermometer.

Many families in my school are trying their best to provide an environment that is safe for their children; however, some rely on the hand to forehead method and may not have a working thermometer to determine an accurate temp.

While many children may be asymptomatic and show no signs at all, one of the most common symptoms of COVID in children and young adults is a fever.

Fever screening is important. Having a working thermometer at home will provide families an opportunity to conduct daily fever screenings for themselves and their children. In addition, it will assist in the fever screening process that will be conducted upon the students' return to school since parents will be able to take the temperatures from home.
