Once a month, our students gather together as an entire group to complete an art activity. The students complete a creative project that is somewhat seasonal and displayed in our halls. We gather together so that students have an opportunity to enjoy time chatting with their peers and get a chance to do something relaxing and not too academic. There is so much new learning in 5th grade, sometimes they just need to rest their brains to help with their social-emotional learning and mental health.
Art is an important part of a child's development.
Art is proven to help student's mental health by expressing emotions. It encourages teamwork and socialization skills. Art is educational and builds self-esteem.
We try to expose the students to different mediums. We use watercolors and crayons for crayon resistance, shaving cream, and food coloring to dye paper for turkey feathers. A printer is needed to print photos of the students for their winter snow globe and "Scream" painting. Sharpies will be used for outlining our "Scream" paintings and leprechaun drawings. Students experiment with mixing tempura paints to get tints and shades of green for their leprechaun pictures. Chalk and oil pastels create our holiday lights.
Our 5th graders are a social, energetic group that works hard, but also looks forward to a monthly break to chill with their friends while making fun art projects.
