My Project

We may be biased - but we believe we have the best kids around! Our school serves about 450 Kindergarten-5th grade students. One of our focus areas this year is writing and building our students' literacy skills through an effective writing program.

I've been teaching for more than 20 years and, by far, the most effective strategy I've used for teaching writing in the primary grades is Interactive Writing.

This instruction technique where the teacher and students "share the pen" to craft a word, sentence or piece, allows a teacher to differentiate the experience while teaching conventions and content. I can't overstate how important this technique is for teaching young students how to write.

Last summer, a 2nd grade teacher and I led a four week session on how to implement interactive writing. With teachers now trained in this strategy, we have seen an incredible amount of growth in writing this year! Currently, my class is working on a narrative about a guinea pig that visited last week. The students are responsible for crafting the sentences to improve their sentence structure and using classroom resources (e.g., word wall, sound wall) to help write the sentence together. So far we have "A guinea pig came to my class. It is soft. It ate a carrot." Tomorrow we are going to add a sentence about its color. I can't wait to share the finished product with you!

Chart paper and markers allow us a large surface to write our work and then illustrate it. We then post the sticky chart pages outside and inside the classroom for students to read and share. Thank you for taking the time to read our proposal and for your support. We are incredibly grateful to our community that believes in supporting students' writing development!
