Charging Stations, Cables, Kleenex and Soap: Help my Students Focus!
My students need charging stations for their phones, kleenex for their colds, pencils and soap for their hands, and pads for their desks and stools. That way they can put their focus on their learning.

My Students
Remember the magic of science class when you were growing up? Physics opens up a world of wonder and excitement for young minds. While learning important concepts, we get to have fun with the coolest toys in school.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and from the start I try to instill a sense of wonder and awe in science.
The magic of Physics comes alive in my room with interactive projects, hands-on labs, and mind blowing demos that reveal deep misconceptions most of us have about how things work. On the first day of school my students work together to try to understand how Lenz' Law works (without ever having been taught the concept). It's amazing to see the ideas that sprout forth on that first day. From then on, they are constantly challenged and must defend their positions with evidence.
My Project
This year I put up an organizer for their phones and the students grumbled at first, but I immediately noticed an uptick in their engagement and scores. After a week, it was second nature to drop off their phones and get ready to start class when they came in the room. Next year I want to add charging stations and cords near the organizer so that students can charge their phones while in class.
By taking away distractions to learning, I am able to foster an environment where students can focus on the tasks at hand.
We all get sniffles from time to time. By having a steady supply of kleenex and foaming hand soap throughout the year I can help keep the germs from transferring so much.
I also would like to alleviate some of the wear and tear on the floor to help our maintenance staff. By placing felt pads under the desks and lab stools in my room I plan on making it easier to move the desks. This will also keep the floors cleaner and cut down on desk noise.
