This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I currently work as a 2nd-grade special education teacher in South Bronx, NY. These little superheroes are no higher than 5 feet tall but are saving the world by responsibly practicing social distancing in the classroom. More than 90% of our students receive free lunch. Our students have a lot of potential that needs to be nurtured. Despite the adversities, they show up each day ready to learn. They are my inspiration!
My Project
The goal for this project is to create a classroom library filled with characters who look and feel the way students do. When you create a culturally diverse classroom library, you provide students with the opportunity for these kinds of experiences. Students can also learn about a culture or experience other than their own, which promotes empathy and an understanding of the world around them.
A vital aspect of reading comprehension is for students to make text-to-self connections, this library will provide the opportunity for exactly that!
Seeing themselves in stories will make reading FUN!
The books selected are culturally inclusive and/or relate to social-emotional learning. These characters have similar feelings to those our students experience. Through the readings, students will learn that their feelings are normal and will be provided with ideas of how to manage their emotions.
