My students need hardcover books. Hardbacks are sturdier and longer-lasting!

My Students
They say, "Don't judge a book by its cover." However, we all do! Each June, I find myself having to toss out about ten paperback books because they get "read to death." My project includes almost all hardcover books, many of which are Caldecott winners.
My students are in a high poverty inner city district.
They have a yearning to learn. My students vary in reading ability from kindergarten to fourth grade reading level. We love reading vivid picture books aloud and individually. Like every class, my class appreciates books in their best conditions. A book with a tattered cover is harder to read, and it doesn't last as long on the shelf. Hardcover books will make my classroom a slightly more wonderful place to learn.
My Project
Many of the books in this collection have character building lessons. At our school, we have a character focus. I can use these texts to help teach topics such as anti bullying, anti racism/pro-reconciliation, gender equality, and anger management. Sometimes these topics are easier to relate to in a story rather than in our lives. Hearing about how a book's character manages his/her problems can help students connect to their own.
Great books can change lives in many ways. They can be entertainment.
Books teach lessons, and they help readers learn to manage emotions. My students' lives could change due to having access to great literature.
