My students walk into our classroom every day with big smiles and eager to learn attitudes. I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything. I teach at an elementary school in Richmond, TX where we have 20+ different languages spoken by our students.
Some of my students receive backpack food on the weekend, and many of them are raised by grandparents or other family members.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to start each day anew! They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can, lead by example and be proactive about their futures.
My Project
This project is designed to help my students be more empathetic to other kids who are different from them. Increasing their level of empathy will help them in older grades, when they feel peer pressure from other classmates.
These books will be used in whole group and small group lessons, and other individual books will be added to the classroom library.
These books will also be used for reading response assignments and homework. My hope is that my students will be inspired to help others different from them, and to do the right thing when no one is looking at them.
