Chapter One: Books for Bright Minds

My Project

This school year, our upper elementary and middle school students have shown growing engagement with literature through the school-wide curriculum Readtopia by Building Wings. Using principles from Dr. Karen Erickson and Dr. David Koppenhaver's "Comprehensive Literacy for All", Readtopia creates daily opportunities for students to learn literacy concepts through shared and close reading, comprehension activities, and phonics instruction. Another important part of the curriculum, and comprehensive literacy instruction, is providing students with self-selected reading opportunities. To create these opportunities, our students must have access to a range of fiction and non-fiction books that align with their interests.

This project was created to start filling program libraries at our three locations servicing individuals with autism.

Some program sites have done away with school-wide libraries, and some of our students cannot effectively transition to access libraries that are available.

Our students have a range of abilities, interests, and communication styles. Something that each of these students share, though, is the purposeful engagement they are exhibiting in books and literature. Your donation and support will help us begin to create libraries full of grade, and age, respectful books for students to continue to experience the joys of reading.
