Mrs. Diehl from Columbus GA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 25 copies each of "Because of Winn-Dixie" and "Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World" to explore realistic fiction which will afford opportunities to increase their higher order thinking skills that promote comprehension.

Our children face economic hardships and do not get the opportunity to read quality literature except in school. I believe that a novel can foster a love for reading and expose them to various real world situations. We currently do not have these resources so badly needed.
Our students are dedicated to their education, but unfortunately they do not necessarily have the resources to meet their potential.
We are in an area of poverty and books are a luxury, not a staple. Our school is full of dedicated teachers, who spend a great deal of their own earnings to give their students a better quality education. These are kids that deserve to read good books and dream about the possibility of a bright and successful future.
Novels provide the opportunity to create a total learning experience. Not only will they visit places they have never been, but meet characters they could never imagine. They will be able to do multidisciplinary activities that involves reading, writing, social studies, math, and science. Most importantly it will give them the knowledge of the world around them and open up their imaginations to new ideas. They will make connections with the characters, some whose lives may closely parallel their own. If you can read a novel and have it change one part of your life, it was worth the read.
We do not have the funds to supply class copies of novels such as Because of Winn Dixie and Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World.
The children love to be read to and to get the opportunity to hold a book in their hands as I am reading to them. This gives the students an ownership in the novels that we are reading.
