My Project
Having a wide variety of books in a classroom library is so important for students' learning. The books I selected are chapter books we are missing from our collection and read aloud books that tell stories different from their own, but are still impactful. By exposing them to stories that share different experiences from their own, their understanding of the world and empathy for others will deepen and broaden.
The historical stories are doubly so, as they help students realize that history is not something gathering dust on a shelf, but something we create and react to every day.
Reading and hearing stories that do reflect themselves acknowledges their experiences and make them feel heard and seen, when they might not have before.
Chapter books, even if they are above a student's reading level, help them learn concepts about character development, plot, genre, and so much more that is sometimes hard to describe in a mini-lesson. I am so excited to have these books in our collection, not only for the enjoyment that my students will get from reading them, but also from the discussions they will prompt and the creativity that they will inspire!
