I teach 18 enthusiastic, motivated fifth grade students in a Title 1 School. The majority of the kids come from a low income home. Several of my students live with extended family (grandparents).
I have a diverse group of students with many different learning styles and they are eager to explore.
They all get the opportunity to teach a peer a concept their peer is struggling with, and they achieve this task respectfully. Despite all their differences, this class truly cares for each other and we have become a small family.
My Project
My students will benefit from class sets of chapter books. I am requesting The One and Only Ivan, and Esperanza Rising. These both are books that will surely capture the attention of fifth grade students. They will be able to relate to the story through the characters and be exposed to high academic vocabulary. My goal is to instill a love for reading by exposing them to different genres.
One area students struggle in is reading comprehension, and having a class set of books allows the children to have a hands-on copy to work on reading strategies, which will help improve their level of comprehension.
