Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching in the inner city teaches you a lot about resilience. That is what the students have in our school- resilience. They live in a high crime, poverty ridden area of the city, where crime and extreme experiences are the norm. Some do not have stable homes or enough food to eat.

Our school does its best to provide a safe and respectful environment for students to learn and grow.

Our students receive free breakfast and lunch to all students. We provide a mandatory physical education program to address the growing concern of a sedentary lifestyle that can lead to childhood obesity and diabetes.

My Project

One possible strategy that I want to use this upcoming year to help my struggling student is art. Most of my students have academic challenges, by the time they reach 5th grade their challenges manifest itself in behavior that is counterproductive to academic success.

Research has shown the benefits of high-arts environments appear especially strong for disadvantaged students.

Arts prepares students for success in school, work and life by boosting math and literacy achievement, developing creativity and critical thinking skills, strengthening perseverance.

With these art supplies, I would like to create and environment that is supportive and safe for my students to express themselves. Developing a community of artist would help close the achievement gap in our school.
