My students need to read about acts of courage and hope to become inspired to change the world, while documenting their story using iMovie on an iPad.

Our IB school strives to teach students to be open-minded, inquirers, and risk-takers. They come in every morning filled with questions, eager to learn more. My students are amazing critical-thinkers, at only ten and eleven years old they watch the news and are concerned and invested in the world around them.
I believe in challenging each student to reach their maximum potential.
At my Title I school over 96% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. I have an inclusion class with many students receiving special education services and many receiving gifted services. My students are diverse, driven, and unique. Gifted, IEPs, dreamers, doers; I believe that we are all more than a label, and I strive to create an environment where all students have a voice.
With all the bad news in the world today it can make you doubt that one person can make a difference. My students care deeply about others, and they have asked me what things kids can do to make the world better. They need true stories that will redefine the way they view the world and motivate them to believe that kids can make a difference. Students will choose from three stories based on real events of courage and bravery. I Am Malala, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and A Long Walk to Water, my requested books, are all true stories of young people making a difference. As students learn more about the actions of others they will believe in themselves and see that they have the power to shape the future and effect change. For many students, this is their first experience tackling issues of social justice, but their kind hearts and compassion fuel them every day.
Using iMovie on the Apple iPad students will capture their story as they set out to make a difference.
Working collaboratively, students will decide on a project that can be completed in their local community, or steps they can take to improve a global problem. Students will complete research to understand more about their chosen problem and find viable solutions. They will set their plan in action and document their entire journey using an iPad, incorporating photography and writing. At the end of the process, students will have their own powerful digital story proving that young people can make a difference.
