Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school mission is to foster social-justice minded world changers. Through empathy, compassion, perseverance, and responsibility, our fourth graders are growing into activists and peacekeepers.
My students are ready to start changing the world NOW!
The students in my classroom are proud students of color and hard-working English language learners. All of whom love their urban community and want to go to college and get a job to support their low-income families. All they need are the resources and tools to be 21st-century change makers!
My Project
Through the UNICEF Kid Power program and bands, my students will travel the world right from our very own classroom! We will learn about countries like Haiti and Uganda, and the people, communities, and resources that make up these fascinating places.
Each step logged on a UNICEF Kid Power band will contribute to unlocking food packets for malnourished kids around the world!
Each band acts as a step tracker and watch. These bands are linked to a device that tracks the data on our UNICEF Kid Power webpage. Here we can see how many steps we have logged, as well as the steps of other schools participating in our area. The steps will be tallied and converted into food packets that will be donated to families in countries that UNICEF serves.
We will also learn about the Global Goals for Sustainable Development created by the United Nations, how exercise is important for your mind and body, and why we should use our capabilities to help those in need. Through empathy, we can understand people half a world away and be social justice world changers!
