Committed to changing the way we may feel about math! How about we start a math club and get about 10 or 12 kids super excited about math! That was initial thought. However, we had more then 27 children sign up for math club.
How could we possibly turn any child away from math?!
Volunteers stepped up in order to include all students interested.
Our math club represents the wonderful diversity, that our whole school does. Approximately, 79% of our families are on free or reduced price lunches. Many of the students speak Spanish or Polish with English as their second language. The children in our math club understand that it is all right to have a different background, be a different age and have a different physical appearance. We all share one common thread, and that is our love for math!
As teacher and math coach, I love the challenge of the children being so different, I must stay on my toes and differentiate. Some of the math club children are in second grade, just learning how to add and others are prepping for the PARACC test at a fourth/fifth grade level. It is a great group!
Currently, we are looking for more variety in the books we read during math club. We only have a hand full of books and would love to have a "Math Library" within the room. We are looking for books in order to build this mathematical library.
We have so many mathematical games, cards, workbooks, and the like, however, we are short on math books!
Books about time and money would engage our second grade mathematicians, fractions would help our third grade scholars and multiplication/division will help our fourth grade experts!
Our math club has such a variety of learners. We really are hoping for a large range of math books in order to have each interest met.
