Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I greet my students at the door each day using their name. They love to hear their name and using it is important to build relationships with them. They come from an inner city neighborhood, full of crime and hardship. Our school is a few miles away from where they live and if they miss the bus, they will probably miss school.
I want to support the Whole Child and increase social and emotional wellness for my students by providing opportunities to develop the ABILITY to recognize and respond effectively to their emotions and interact with others.
I provide as many enriching opportunities for my students as possible to help build background knowledge through experiences to help them develop life skills and make real world connections to academics. 100% of my students receive free and reduced price meal plans. They come to our school below grade level in reading and math, may be sleep deprived and hungry.
My students have talents and skills they haven't even discovered yet. They are full of energy and depend on structured instruction to get the most benefit from school.
My Project
Students are fascinated with slime and slime like things. This project will help students learn the different uses of gelatin and agar and how they change when water and heat are applied and molded. The building block molds will allow students to make gummy building and structures where they can house the fun gummy animals. These molds are reusable and students during the school day and after school will benefit from using these resources hundreds of time. Students will explore a variety of ways to create sculptures using gelatin products.
These molds will provide students and exciting and creative way to understand the properties of gelatin and agar and help them make connections to science, nutrition and dietary choices while they create art.
These resources will provide the foundation of knowledge and experience to ignite student interest to make even more culinary art creations like mousse and french pastries. This project will be a bridge for science, nutrition and discussions about culture for all students.
