This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a predominantly low income part of the Bronx, NY. Ninety-eight percent qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Unfortunately, many don't have access to computers at home, and the time they spend in the computer lab is a real benefit for them.
I strive to provide them with the same opportunities that my own children have, but it's a hard task.
The future is Computer Science and without the same exposure to this technology they will fall further behind in current life skills. My hope is to make their Computer Science class the place that makes them want to be lifelong problem solvers!
My Project
After being lucky enough to visit a model school for Computer Science in the NYCDOE, I have become extremely motivated to afford my students with the same opportunities I was able to observe. All of the students were using their problem solving skills using Coding to help them through various learning experiences. I witnessed kids using tablets to create 3D models of classroom passes, because theirs had been lost. I saw students programming a robot to travel from one continent to another, using a map of the world. I witnessed children who were engaged because these were real life problems that they were solving.
While doing these Project-Based Learning activities, teamwork is essential and the kids are constantly providing each other with feedback.
As a teacher or any professional, we know that feedback is essential to us becoming better at whatever it is we do. To aid in this, I have asked for the board game, "Code Master." This will be an essential tool to start having my students think in code. It will provide students with the opportunity to use these skills while being "unplugged." Students get a lot of time to figure things out on their own and with partners, using trial and error during the coding process, and this game is perfect!
By providing my students access to a 3D printer they will be able to take their digital creations and see them turn into real life objects. How exciting will it be for students to bring home these creations? I can just see proud smiles on both the students' and parents' faces, can't you? The ideas for student projects are limitless and exciting to think about. Hopefully with your help, my students will be given the chance they deserve to prepare for the digital global economy!
