Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an inner-city school made up of students who are often dabbling in gangs, drugs, and worrying about where they're going to sleep at night.
Many of my kids come from foster homes, have survived traumatic experiences and are doing everything possible to make it through school in one piece.
These teenagers are up against a plethora of obstacles that most of us couldn't begin to imagine. However, in my class, they learn the meaning of the word resilience. They learn to work hard in spite of their circumstances. They begin to hold on to the hope that they can, in fact, change their futures through higher education.
My Project
The majority of my students do not have money for basic school supplies like pencils, binder paper, and notebooks.
I spend hundreds of dollars on providing students with the supplies they need on a daily basis because our school only provides us with a certain amount of funds every year.
For the over 150 students that I serve, I only receive 10 reams of paper every quarter. This results in having to pick up a box of paper from Office Depot just to have enough copies for students to be able to participate in Science Labs.
Having already had a late start in their education, my students are in dire need of any support you can provide to give them the tools they need to succeed.
