Our school is located in a very low-income geographic area located near a major military base. Despite economic shortfalls and cutbacks, our students want to excel and have a great work ethic. They pull together to get through hard times, and are very good in supporting each other when the going gets tough. Being able to provide an environment and the resources that will help our students reduce their stress and increase academic performance is well worth going the extra mile to make it happen.
My Project
A number of students have been asking about forming a Debate Club, and a new teacher has volunteered to be the sponsor. Students involved in Speech & Debate develop higher-level thinking skills through application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and creativity. They come to understand what they believe about the issues that confront them in our culture and why. It can also result in increased problem-solving abilities and overall academic performance.
Currently, there are no materials on hand to provide basic instruction in debate, and acquisition of the requested titles will supply the fundamental knowledge that students can use to become successful debaters.
The books requested are "Debating to Win Arguments: The Elements of Debating and How to Counter Arguments With Ease Using Logic", "How to Have the Final Say: The Tools You Need to Win Any Argument", and "The New Art of Being Right: 38 Ways to Win An Argument in Today's World." These are three of the most current works on the art of debate and will provide an excellent starting point for instruction.
