Change the Life of a Very Special Kid

My students need a machine for non-sighted children: it teaches them Braille; it also translates from text to Braille and from Braille to text.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This project is for one very special child. He is a non-sighted 2nd-grader in a class of 25 sighted children. We want to integrate him into the classroom by buying him a braille / text / braille translator. It will also give him access to computer programs created especially for blind students.

Let me tell you: this child is an inspiration.

He has the most upbeat attitude imaginable. He listens closely to his teacher and loves to answer her questions. But what happens when the lessons involve reading and writing? Currently, his teacher has to read texts aloud to him - and she can't read what he writes, because it is in braille. She has to wait for a vision specialist, who visits the classroom for a few hours each week, to translate this student's writing for her. And the kid can't do enrichment activities on the computer, as his classmates do regularly, because we don't have computer programs for blind students. This child is great. His teacher is great. But, as things stand, the odds are stacked against them. That's why the Mountbatten Brailler is such a godsend.

My Project

Just what does the Mountbatten Brailler do? It translates text to Braille and Braille to text. It will allow the student to study the same texts as his classmates. It will let his teacher understand his written work the moment it is written. And it will also let the student use computer programs designed specifically for the non-sighted. The person requesting this machine is a Media Specialist. The machine will belong to the library at our K-8 Center, and it will be checked out every year to this child's teacher, whoever has the privilege of teaching him, all the way from now, 2nd grade, until the kid is in 8th grade....and beyond. When he is promoted to High School, this machine will follow him on an inter-library loan. It is going to make a colossal difference to this boy's life.

Please help this very special young man all the way through his school career.

He is such a great kid. I wish you could meet him. He has a wonderful personality, and is really keen to learn. The Mountbatten Brailler will help him fully integrate into his classes and to get all that he can out of his education.
