My Students
The preschool curriculum in our high-need community includes hands-on, exciting activities, in which the children are actively engaged in learning. Children who chronically fail to get enough rest do not learn as well as better-rested children. We need comfy sheets for our mats to help us rest.
Our children are from relatively low income families and very often, it is difficult for their parents to purchase educational materials for their children.
I am always seeking ways to make their preschool experience wonderful. Our school is located in a struggling, underprivileged part of New York City. The children I teach are all three and four years old. They are curious, happy, enthusiastic, and extremely loving little children.
My Project
As I begin to make plans for the 2013-14 school year, one of the issues at hand is to prepare the children to take a 30 minute nap in September. Our three and four years old children are very busy...moving from one activity to the next with high amounts of energy, in some cases! I have found that overtired children resort to hyperactivity and difficult behavior, as a way of fighting off exhaustion. Rest not only promotes alertness, but will make the children less moody. We have new mats for September, but are in need of comfy sheets. I believe that this will really help the children rest and give them a sense of security. All little children love "soft flannel sheets." After a busy morning, the children are ready to relax after lunch. I have lullaby and classical music CDs I play and stuffed animals to cuddle. Some children actually sleep during this time while others may just rest their bodies and brains to recharge for the remainder of the day!
Young children may face challenges in education and in their lives.
Children need to rest in order to complete a full day of preschool. Rest is a vital need, essential to a child's health and growth. Rest time is also a good time for children to look at books, listen to music, or spend some one-on-one time with me or my assistant. Please help us get "comfy sheets", so my preschoolers will be able to take a peaceful nap.
