Help me give my students an opportunity to change our school, literally. My AVID seniors - those hard-working, college-bound students - want to leave something behind, a beautiful mural.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About 70% of my students have been classified as English Language Learners at some point in their schooling. They come from a working-class background, their parents often have not graduated college. It means a lot to my students to "walk across that stage." My students have big goals and they will accomplish a lot of firsts in their family. A good majority of my students have had incredibly challenging, difficult events in their life, from deaths to "broken homes." How they wear that scholar mask is often beyond me. But they show up and work hard. I'm honored to teach them.
My Project
While our high school located is in a working-class neighborhood and has lots of resources, the buildings are dated, stained, undeniably ugly. And on some level, students internalize that message that they are not worth it. My AVID 12 students have worked really hard throughout high school, proving anyone can make it to an excellent college. They want to change not just the school but the narrative of our school. So they have designed a mural and we're ready to get to work. We just need the materials. With your help, we can paint a college-going mural, one that combines the metaphor of a road with our town and higher-education. Please help!
