Change Gonna Come: Teaching About Tolerance

My students need a class set of the graphic novel March, CDs about the music of the Civil Rights Movement, and six DVDs to learn about the impact of racism and importance of tolerance.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Tennyson's classroom raised $832

My Students

Many of my sixth graders do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. The public library that was across the street closed years ago so my kids do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school. They live in an area that is a pocket of poverty. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Many of them are the children of deployed military personnel. I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a very transient student population. Over 50% of my class come and go during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language.

My students need to learn about the Civil Rights movement but we do not have appropriate, accessible, up-to-date materials for them due to budget cuts.

My Project

My school is not a Title l school, but we are a school that is economically disadvantaged. Our district recently adopted a new social studies curriculum, but our classroom does not have materials to teach the topic of racism, conflict, and tolerance. My students have nothing that is appropriate and on-grade level to read and as a result, they are beginning to hate social studies. I am asking for three music CDs, a class set of the graphic novel March by John L. Lewis, copies of the Watsons Go To Birmingham, six DVDs including Four Little Girls and background, resource materials. I feel that having music in our classroom for my students to use would help them to understand the protest, peace and civil rights movements. I would teach the songs and music of the civil rights movement. My students would study the lyrics and learn key concepts while they expand their knowledge base. The music I have selected is representative of the time period.

These are materials I desperately need to teach my students about tolerance, compassion and civil rights in turbulent times.

We have nothing like this in our school and we have no money to purchase any.

Your wonderful donation could make a world of difference to my students.

With your help, my class would be able to read the book March, learn the impact of racism and the importance of tolerance. They will engage in meaningful discussions. As they read the books and study the lyrics, they will also improve their reading ability.
