Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a high poverty elementary school with close to one thousand students, that is located in a neighborhood that is settled in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of the students receive a free lunch because of their socio-economic status. My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. They all are English Language Learners and many of them have learning disabilities. Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth.
Ben Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Seeing the excitement in kids eyes when they learn something new, makes teaching the best job ever. My students need as many hands-on experiences as possible in school, to enhance and reinforce their learning. There aren't many community resources outside of our walls available.
My Project
I am asking for a Reading Comprehension Games Library, a complete set of Vocabulary Match-Ups and a set of Pick-A-Problem Math Warm-Ups for Grade 4. The resources and games I chose will reinforce skills that are necessary for my students to excel in math and all facets of language arts.
There is nothing better than having fun while you learn and these resources will not only give my students practice with important skills, but it will also give them an opportunity to work in small groups with classmates in a fun way.
My students need constant review because they are English Learners. These interactive games provide an entertaining way for them to review skills that need to be fully developed so they can succeed in middle and high school. Students will use the materials daily during centers time and free choice time.
